Four Key Elements

<Notes>I’m going to show you four different ways that you can master the art of coaching conversations, and specifically, I’m going to give you a way to use the future as a point of leverage to support your client in achieving great results. I’m also going to show you a way to structure basic coaching conversations. How do you maneuver yourself from one point to the other, from one conversation to the other without losing yourself or the client in the process? I’m also going to give you a very powerful way to work through a self-limiting belief - you know, that one thing that keeps your client from achieving success that they know they can have, and you as their coach also know is possible. And finally, we’re going to take a look at what are the hidden motivators. Those hidden intentions that your client has that could sabotage them or keep them stuck or at the very least, keep them from the possibility that they have by working with you as their coach. </Notes>

I’ve used this model over the last 17 years in different forms and in different ways, and really took some time in the last few years to uncover the model, to explore it - kind of like a laboratory to take a look at what really, really works when working with a client using this particular model. </Notes>

Making a Difference Today

<Notes>I’ve now trained over 400 coaches in this specific methodology and the feedback has been phenomenal. We’ve seen great success with a number of different clients all the way from top CEOs to a mom and pop shop who tried to turn their business around in a tough economy. Even though I’m teaching you today the Future Now method, I want to be very emphatic and clear with you that what coaching is about is dealing with the present. We want to make a difference for our client today, right now, right where you are in what you’re doing. The way we go about it is a little different than just talking about your current circumstances. So I’m going to show you a way to have key leverage in your coaching conversations in order to make a difference for your client today. </Notes>

<Notes>Now, let’s discuss therapy for a moment. You see, therapy deals with the past, but it’s a behavioral science which means it really wants to affect the client’s present experience. If you go to therapy or if I go to therapy, what we want to do is have a different experience today. What therapists do is they use the past as leverage to create a different experience for somebody today. By taking a look at the past and reframing it, seeing if there’s a different way to look at the past, to see things that happened in the past, we can create a new experience for a client today.</Notes>

<Notes>Just as important in the car and in the coaching scenario is the rearview mirror. I don’t know if you’ve ever tried to drive a car without a rearview mirror - it can be a little dangerous. So what’s the rearview mirror for? The rearview mirror is to make sure that what’s behind you doesn’t catch up to you, especially when you’re going to stop or you’re thinking of passing somebody else. You’ve got to make sure when you’re working with a client and they’re reaching for their future, it’s important that you make sure that nothing from the past or on the sides of the client’s current experience gets in the way of your client achieving the future they say that they want.</Notes>

We’re going to explore her story as we learn about the Future Now model, to give you some concrete illustrations of how you can use this model with your own clients. Jackie has been at her company for 4 years and has moved up the corporate ladder methodically to her current status as the number two salesperson in the entire company. Of the top 10 salespeople in the company, Jackie is the only woman and the 2nd youngest in the sales department. She is enthusiastic, energetic, and unapologetic about her quick ascension to the number two spot on the sales team. Jackie has been in the number two spot for 18 months, but she is afraid that she has stalled at this level. As we proceed, we’ll use the Future Now model to help Jackie break out of this plateau.</Notes>

<Notes>So let's dive a little deeper into this Future Now model. Before we do that, let's lay a real good foundation. What is coaching? I believe coaching is creating an opportunity or a context where somebody can have their internal conversation out loud. What we want to do in coaching is create this context an environment where somebody can explore those conversations that are in the deep inner parts of their soul, because that’s the conversation that governs the way that they participate into their own possibility. </Notes>

Avoid Reactive Coaching

<Notes>You see, if your client starts the coaching with Point A, with their current reality, with what’s most relevant to them today, and enrolls you into fixing Point A - “Hey, Coach, can you help me with this?” “Can you just tell me how to interpret this reality?” “Can you tell me what to do to have a better life today?” - without exploring a powerful, clear Point B, there really isn’t any hope.	All you’re doing as a coach is trying to make your client feel better. Now lots of coaches fall into this trap. I call it reactive coaching. Your client tells you what’s going on and you’re trying to reframe what’s going on so that your client will feel better, rather than create a powerful Point B, a clear commitment to the future that will require your client, not to just feel better, but to participate differently in order to create the future that they say that they want. This hope, this energy that is intangible and yet incredibly powerful, is what I believe is absolutely essential to have a powerful coaching conversation. </Notes>

Help her create a scenario for success. It’s very important that your client commit to achieving specific, measurable objectives as part of this process. In Jackie’s case, she decides to make a one-on-one appointment with her manager to discuss organizational support (admin person or software process). She has avoided this kind of conversation in the past because she didn’t want to expose her weakness to her manager. Before she makes this appointment, you can coach her through the scenario, to help her prepare for the hurdles she might face. Objective is to ask for help vs. complain.</Notes>

<Notes>Remember – nothing happens without participation. Your job in this planning phase is to insure that the client does not only mentally agree with you, but has aligned their life in such a way that they are actually going to participate and discipline themself into this new possibility that you have agreed upon. It’s very exciting because this is when the client truly shows their colors. This is where the rubber hits the road and you get to see what the client really believes. It’s important that you test all the variables. </Notes>
